® & Surrey Suites: Positive Changes Ahead:

Did you know that half a million people already live in Surrey and another thousand move in each month? That’s about 10,000 people looking for new homes in Surrey every year  who could benefit from the expertise of a REALTOR®. It’s no wonder then that the city’s mayor, councillors and senior staff were eager to talk to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB) on September 22.

Board staff will be following up with the city to obtain more details on the city’s plans for secondary suites. So far, we know that the city is developing a policy intended to:

  • make it easier for emergency personnel to locate people who need assistance;
  • raise the safety standards of secondary suites by ensuring they comply with fire and building code requirements;
  • help address neighbourhood issues such as parking;
  • recognize the value of suites in helping homebuy­ers with their mortgages while providing affordable homes to groups such as students;
  • include a “grace period” to allow existing suites to come into compliance without property owners having to spend a lot of money; and
  • increase the value of homes which have suites.

Representatives from the city also expressed interest in receiving input from local REALTORS® on a variety of other topics, such as parking, seniors and development issues, and Surrey’s Housing Action Plan.
